The Lord of the Rings: War in the North™ - Legacy Edition

It Doesn't Work

My specifications: Windows 11 64 Bit Intel Core I7 4790 Nvidia GeForce Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti 4GB (2 X) Kingston DDR3 1600MHz 8GB Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 Transcend SSD370S 256GB 2.5" SATA SSD Western Digital Blue SA510 2TB 2.5" SATA SSD.

LEGO® The Lord of the Rings™

We Live In A Clown World

We live in a world where Lego's video game franchise is popular worldwide for decades. In other words - we live in a society. Or even better - we live in a clown world. But I am not surprised. This is a 3D Adventure and Action game with fixed camera angle. That one alone is atrocious enough in itself. But there is more. There are a lot of instances with platforming, jumping, positioning to avoid environmental hazards, all with fixed camera angle in 3D space, and enemies attacking from all sides of the screen. Mouse can not be used. The game was designed for consoles. All controls are bound on keyboard. Controller is strongly recommended with this game. As a big fan of The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit movies, and fan of Middle-Earth - Shadow Of Mordor and The Lord Of The Rings - The Battle For Middle-Earth II (which needs re-release and lots of balancing patches, especially for underpowered Goblins and Mordor factions) I do not fall for this. This would have been tolerable with 3rd person free camera movement, but the fact that is fixed is so inconvenient. This is a common thing for all Lego games, as they are all the same, just set in different universes, with different themes. Not recommended.

Kholat

Boring, Janky, Walking Simulator

Kholat is a boring walking simulator, set in Soviet Union. The plot is about the explorers who got lost in the wilderness in harsh weather conditions during the winter. Who are they? What did they explore? What happened to them? Who cares, honestly. The game doesn't tell much in the beginning, but I did not play long to find out any relevant details. Yeah, you get the achievements for just collecting the lore notes scattered around the map. What an exciting gameplay. Right? And more so - what an accomplishment - to get the achievements for collecting lore notes. Just amazing. As for the game itself: player has the first person view, and is destined to walk through the snowy areas. What a hell of a gameplay. So exciting. The scenery, landscapes and graphics are beautiful. It will push your GPU a lot. Nvidia Gigabyte 750 Ti 4GB can run this game at 1440p at glorious 27 FPS. I could run this game with my new gear - Nvidia MSI Shadow 4070 Ti Super OC 16GB, but nah, the game did not deserve it. This game could be used as a benchmark tool, or developers of this game should reuse these environments to make the First Person Shooter game. It really should have been a First Peron Shooter, to be honest. But, hey, I could imagine how half-baked that one would be. The same developers made another bad game called Seven. Seven is unfinished, unpolished and unoptimized. Kholat, on the other hand seems a bit more ambitious, but it is clunky a bit. I did not make much progress into the game, as there really was no incentive to do otherwise. A game that fails to convey a sense of high quality does not warrant much effort from me, either. The developers are clearly hardcore amateurs in this industry, and they seem to not aspire to achieve something better than the mediocre things they already did, and surpass the rank of amateurs. I will leave this review as half-baked as they did the game. Actually, I put more effort in this review. Not recommended.

A Story About My Uncle

Not An Interesting Story

A Story About My Uncle is Platformer game in first person view. The story is about a guy who wants to find his missing uncle, who strangely disappeared inside of the fantasy world. Along the way player will meet some outlandish characters known as salamanders, who will help the player reach his/her goal. The gameplay consists of jumping around on floating islands, and using a power suit as a grappling hook. Actually, it is a laser beam that connects to the marked runic carving on the intractable floating islands, rather than a hook, but ok, it has the same effect. Below the floating islands is a big height, that looks like an endless abyss. The goal is to avoid falling down, but that is the hard part. How many times did i fall down, it is hard to tell. It becomes frustrating at times, but for the most part it blows anyways, because of the sloppy control mechanics. Controls are pretty basic when nit comes to the movement on WASD keys and sprinting is set on shift. In order to jump a player can use the space bar. In order to jump even higher, the player must hold the right click in order to charge the energy, and release it. So, the release comes with a delay, and it makes it a clunky mess of a poorly implemented mechanic. The big jump is not fluid, but static. Then there is a leap, where the player must hold the right mouse button to charge the jump, plus the player must move forward, and hold shift to spring, all at the same time. That is way too much un-intuitive. And on top of that as you do the leap, you can not move while in mid-air to calibrate the landing. No, it is a fixed angle. In which direction you face, there you will land, without the option to move mid-air. That is also a mess. No wonder the game does not punish you for falling down, but rather moves you back at the last checkpoint, as there are plenty of them. Developers should have made the mid-air controls like the developers of Saints Row IV, who did a fantastic job by allowing players to do sprints, jumps and dashes mid air, all at blazing speeds. Here it is simply not possible to make crazy maneuvers, due to poor controls. On top of that the player will get drawn to the object he/she grapples, which can impair mid-air movement, if the hook is not released soon. There is limited number of times a player can use a hook after he/she jumps. At the beginning of the game you can hook only once while in mid-air. As the story progressed for couple of minutes the limit will increase to three. Try and use the hook the fourth time - nope, you will fall down, as you ran out of charges. That is also unsatisfying. It takes couple of times to get used to hook on the fixed and moving objects, and even though I did get a feel for it after a while, I do say that objectively this is poorly done. And yet this movement, which is unsatisfying, is the whole selling point of the game. The graphics look good, the models look cartoonish, story is rather non-significant and boring, the voice acting is ok. Not recommended.

Styx: Master of Shadows

Styx Is A Highly Overrated Franchise

Styx is one of the franchises like Assassin's Creed, Prince Of Persia, Hitman, Quake, Doom and Counter Strike, that are overrated. This one has a modest success compared to the named examples, but it is overrated none the less. Regarding the game itself, it has standard graphics for the year 2014, when it came out. The models are all right, and the art direction is a bit dull and seen before in other games. The whole theme is dark, since this is a stealth game. Art style is akin to Kingdoms Of Amalur and Skyrim. However the main character here is a midget orc named Styx. That orc wants to steal a crystal that is important and well guarded, and the whole game revolves around that. He must avoid traps, guards, avoid combat as much as possible, otherwise he's dead. He can barely take a single guardian in an open combat, and must resort to stealth takedowns. Now, after playing Middle-Earth - Shadow Of Mordor, and after getting used to those amazing stealth mechanics of the highest standard, most other games like this one and Dishonoured series just fail at their basic core gameplay, which is stealth. For example, a frustrating gameplay scene happened when I was tasked to sneak past a guard who approached me in a narrow hallway, maybe like 1 hour into the game. The only hiding spot was a barrel to my left. The midget told me to hide there, and so I did. The game is voice acted through the gameplay, as Styx has monologues and shares gameplay tips that way. As the guard, who is human, approached, I realized that my midget orc is well on par to guard's waist, so, how on earth would he be able to walk past Styx, and not notice him. Of course he did notice him. And he rallied the other guard. So the other guy, from the very same room where the approaching guard came, joined in. Now, I wanted to retreat, but there were 3 guards waiting in the room, which I sneaked through, to pass the next one to where I was heading, where these two guards dwelt. I did what they asked of me twice - to crouch next to a barrel in a narrow hallway, and sit there like a duck, at waist level of the approaching guard. I died on both instances. There was no option to hide inside of the barrel, and nothing else to use as a cover. Now, I could have tried out going back, playing the game of cat and mouse with the previous guards plus this incoming one, yada yada yada, but I decided to give up on playing instead, as I didn't become engaged with the game. I simply didn't care. Middle-Earth - Shadow Of Mordor set a stealth bar, and it is so high with its easy controls and great mechanics, it most likely will never be surpassed or reached. Not recommended.

Shadowrun Returns

Just Run Away

The artsyle reminds me of Pillars Of Eternity. It falls in the same category as Pillars Of Eternity, apparently an RPG. The combat system is turn based, akin to Xcom, with the same cover system, action points, reload, etc. It has cyberpnk theme, cartoonish art design, silly character animations, and there is no voice acting. Only text, and a lot of it, with dialogue options, just like in other isometric RPGs. The game didn't excite me at all. If you like the combination of the games I described, then this game is for you. Otherwise don't even bother with it. I do not recommend it.

Bombshell

Drop The Bombshell

Bombshell is a game that was released in peak third wave feminism, back in 2016. It features stereotypical "strong, independent woman" character, who belittles men around her, and bosses them around. I wondered if there is any connection with the developers of another game called Ion Fury, which caught the heat from the globalist leftists, activists who do not even play games, for that famous "ogay" joke (gone, but not forgotten). That studio bent the knee, then faced the real, much bigger backlash from the actual players. They then reversed their bent knee decision, but for some of us it was too late. You bend the knee to the globalist left, you get the ♥♥♥♥ out. Apparently, the only connection between these two studios is their publisher - 3D Realms. Why do I mention all of this? This protagonist, Bombshell, uses a weapon called Ion Fury in this game, that is why I made the conclusion that they are related somehow. Yes, in fact, both games feature the same protagonist - Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison. Another connection, besides the same publisher. If we look past all of that, we see a third person game from isometric perspective. And I like that, honestly. It is an Action game, and action packed with some good music. The main menu music is pure Heavy Metal. Like, real Heavy Metal. Not Mallcore, nor Grunge, nor Rock, nor Punk, nor Alternative, nor Experimental, but Heavy Metal. Those main menu compositions are done in Power Metal and Symphonic Metal styles, and they sound great. During the in-game action, while obliterating and butchering the enemies, Djent music is played. It sounds like Meshuggah's (Djent band) compositions straight from ObZen album. I noticed that developers are big Iron Maiden fans (Heavy Metal band that players Melodic Heavy Metal), since the achievements have many references to the titles of Iron Maiden's albums and songs. Bobmshell has prosthetic metal arm (Heavy Metal arm), and uses it to mount weapons like shotgun, minigun (called maxigun in-game, because it sounds more Heavy Metal), plasma weapons, rocket launchers, and so on. By levelling up she gains skill points, which can be used to increase her energy shield, health, improvements to dodge, and few more stats like that. Dead enemies release keys, which are the in-game currency. it is used to purchase ammunition and to upgrade weapons. Each weapon has the upgrade tree, with its own beneficial perks. They branch out into two directions, after the initial 2 common upgrades. There game does not have complexity of an ARPG, when it comes to the character upgrades. I did not follow the story, I went in for the action, since I do not care much for whatever is going on in the game, written by a bunch of feminists. The combat is ok, the music is great, weapon variety and upgrades are decent, but everything else is not. Maps look literally the same, I mean the ambient. Levels design looks the same. Player has lots of backtracking on a single map in every level. Go to point A, now to point B, now to point C. Now go back to point B, which unlocks the next part of the map. Now go to point A, then go to B, then go back to A, then go to C, then go back to B, and so on. It becomes boring fast. Enemy variety is not diverse enough in first 3 hours of gameplay. I don't know if more enemies appear through the game, but what I experienced so far is nothing but boredom. I do not recommend it.

Shadow Warrior Classic Redux

There Is A Reboot For A Reason

This might have been somewhat fun back in the days when it was released, but from nowadays perspective there is nothing that makes it worth playing. First two Serious Sam games are better than this, which came out few years after this one was released. Your best bet is to go with the Shadow Warrior from 2013. Not recommended.

ENDLESS Space™ - Definitive Edition

Messed Up Beginning Of A Good Franchise

There is no reason to play this game. Its sequel Endless Space 2 is much better at every aspect. This game is outdated in many regards. The only good thing about this game is its soothing music. It is Amplitude Studios’ first attempt at creating a Turn Based Strategy in set in space, similar to Master Of Orion series. Developers are clearly fans of the mentioned series, and they have experience of playing those games, so, how come they did not improve upon the original idea of Master Of Orion is beyond me. Anyway, Endless Space 2 does everything better than this one. There is no point in spending money and time on this. Sequel has better research tree, which is much clearer, and has better visual representation. Sequel has better resource system, which clearly indicates the number of various exploited resource types, and there is a market to sell the surplus. This game does not have inventory dedicated to the resources available, it just takes them into account that they are present in the system, and if the planet is colonized they are being exploited. It doesn’t have the market. Sequel has most of factions available in this game. Some major factions like Sowers are reclassified as minor faction, which makes sense. Others like Hissho are locked behind the DLC content, which does not make sense. In sequel these factions have distinguished playstyles, and mechanics in the research tree to support them. Sequel has better visuals, ship models, much coherent weapon and shield modules, and all the support gear for space ships. Creating a custom race in this game is a nightmare, while the process is easy in the sequel. Sequel has voice acting, this one doesn’t. I could go on about many other improvements of the sequel, like FIDSI bonuses from population, introduction of political system, but the point is – this game is not recommended.

Tower 57

It Could Have Been Much Better Game

What this game needs to be good is a skill tree, passive skills, perks, inventory system, gear system, sharper pixels, bigger maps, mini map, map layout, and it would make a fine ARPG. Instead of that we have a system where player picks three characters, each with one ranged weapon and a thrown weapon, no map, no mini map, bare bones user interface. It is possible to swap between the characters at any time. If one character dies, next one spawns until three of them are gone. They have special bar meter, which when filled, obliterates everything on the screen. Since the are no map nor mini map, it is hard to tell where to go next or where have you been, and the only orientation for that is trail of destruction. There are destructible objects which drop some collectibles. They can be used to purchase player upgrades like more damage, health boost, and such. But those upgrades are bare bones, and there is like 5 upgrade levels for each of five upgrade directions. Who cares for the story, but the overall package is mediocre. Not recommended.
