Mainstreaming Linux? Cool.

Not interested in the product though. Not a flex, but my GPU cost more than the Steam machine. Why would I want to downgrade?

Also Valve.

BanditKeith2: Was Away as for my mini pc

Direct Comparison Highlights CPU Monkey
Spec Steam Machine
Ryzen 7 7840HS

CPU cores/threads 6C/12T
8C/16T

CPU max freq 4.8 GHz
5.1 GHz

GPU RDNA 3 28 CUs, 8 GB GDDR6
Radeon 780M iGPU

Multi‑core CPU perf ~27% of 7840HS
100%

GPU perf (FP32) ~2.2× 780M
100%

But the graphics difference of the 7840hs largely is easily fixable for gaming by allocating more mermory as vram and still have 7GBs more system based ram as mine and its listing I referenced come with 32 GBS ram

while the storage is 1tb

Sure it lacks a gpu and likely wouldn't be as suitable for 2 or 4k but 1 studios show barely anyone uses 4k and the human eye really doesn't pick up differences past 2k , with 2k being not that noticeable a upgrade to what once was referred to as 1k. But anyway it still easily handles the most graphic demanding games if set to medium in most cases save for afew cases

Anyway I say its better specs as the main drawback is easily handled with allocation of vram to make it basically on par with the Steam Machine and still far more cheaper then the Steam

Also raw performance magazines or tech youtubers/influencers I found from my testing of games on both pc and ps5 was BSing as I can easily run all of the ones I got thats also on ps5 looking and playing better then on console despite many saying that the 7840hs igpu wouldn't handle such anywhere as good.. I can only assume they didn't do more ram allocation or something ..

But ya as is if one doesn't game past 2k or lower its easy to currently get atleast where I live tech far cheaper thats on par or better then the Steam machine and/or ps5

Raketenfahrer: Thank you for the detailed explanation, in particular the allocation of additional VRAM and the importance of the used resolution. Certainly a path to pursue further.

I concur also with your second post.

Syphon72: I get what you're saying. I was just saying they could have sold the device at a loss and definitely made up for it with software sales. Honestly, I'm surprised by this price; I thought it would be around 800 or something, not over 1k.

Raketenfahrer: Yes, one can dream... but Gabe is also dreaming, perhaps of at least a helipad for his latest mega yacht. <lol>
Your welcome granted missed some typos and lines of text I only seen when you replied as meant studies and alotting more ram as vram makes such way better.. Aswell as forgot to mention easily alotting more ram as vram would still leave 7gbs more ram for systems and programs then the steam Deck would have.

But ya that price for the specs is thus a problem

Crazy_McGee: I imagine that, had the AI companies not bought up most of the available supply of RAM and storage production for the year then we probably would have gotten a $700 - $799 USD Machine (which would have been reasonable given it's size and relative performance).

Now gamers who might have been interested are in a unique bind: do they buy at the current price or wait? And if they wait, will the price go down? Or, like the half-decade old consoles, go up? It's a tough sell right now - it might be easier to swallow in a year or two; then again it might be even worse in that time.
Good news, the IPO's are coming this year then they legally have to disclose their finances and everyone will see this is a grift within' a month and their stock prices will plummet.
The problem is they are trying to get their stock autobought by NASDAQ changing the rules so that pension funds and 401K funds tagged to Index funds will buy them, same with ETF's linked this way. If your stock profile is set up for that change the setup as these IPO's are collectively going to be listed as being worth $4 Trillion which means their attempt is do a massive snatch and grab to make up for all the money the Venture Capitalists have invested in it. I say let them eat the loss and NONE of the AI companies should be bailed out to the point people should be protesting by blocking streets, wherever in DC and elsewhere to make it clear that anything other than letting them fend for themselves is unacceptable. Send actual paper mail in too, NOT email, making it clear you won't tolerate this.

Thank you for the clarification. I was aware that you meant allocating RAM as VRAM, so prohibiting the CPU part from interfering with it. Investing in a bigger (and faster) RAM kit could give the miniPC a considerable edge. I also looked deeper into to 780M iGPU, which seems quite capable.

And another typo as still used to Steam Deck rather then Steam machine as meant Steam machine.. But ya the 780m igpu can handle basically any current game on the market save for maybe some extra beefy graphical tech demanding ones

Did they though? Data centers use alot of memory, i just don't think 2x8 or 2x16 kits are for them.
Ever check pricing on apple devices? Mac MIni M4 is still 600$ in its base configuration...
So not everything with RAM and SSD seems to be affected.

Maybe Valve should have offered a Steam Machine Variant without RAM. You could have had it
for 800$ and supplied your own RAM (some ppl prob have spares).

The lower memory sticks being scarce is an indirect result of data centers.
People that were going to get higher memory sticks can't, so they buy up lower memory ones.

There's just less to go around because everything of a certain size is being directly sold to data companies.
Hard oooof...

Building a PC to BEAT the STEAM Machine!

Still gonna be flying off the shelves though. Steam drones won't disappoint.

Didn't check but would expect the RAM chips to be soldered on the board, not replaceable.
In my opinion, now is not the time to buy any hardware.

One of my gaming PCs has a Ryzen 3600 and an RX 6600. That's about 15% slower than a Steam Machine. However, it only cost 500€ to build. So paying over $1000 for the same thing is just too expensive. Even if it's designed for casual living room gameplay, it costs too much. The price of a Steam Machine should have been about $600-700. That's what it's worth.

Will people buy a Steam Machine at this high price?

Of course, but it's not because anyone is a fan or anything. It's just because some people don't really care how much stuff costs since they have too much money.

They are replaceable. Valve have several times stated that the ethos is to be moddable and changeable (as long as you know what you are doing).

Here is a video of ETA PRIME taking a Steam Machine apart, and upgrading it to have a 4TB SSD and 64GB RAM - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e94U4z5nfJw

Funnily enough, the machine here came with as single 16GB DIMM stick, but there are two slots, so he took it out and used 2x 32GB DIMM sticks instead.

Valve with their Steam-machine is doomed. It does cost around 1000 USD (entry level model) with the performance of my very old launch-PS5 at nearly twice the price... nearly 6 years after! It even got lesser space... which means, for some modern games it barely fits 2 of them... the rest of the collection need to be cloud-stored in "Steams secure... or not so secure... hands".

However... even Valve... who would have guessed it, is now losing any leverage against the RAM-cartel and the world biggest tech-companies who are now ruling the entire market. I dunno for how long but as long as they can "sell it as a gain for the US citizens and any shareholder" it can take many years for having a friendlier situation for anyone not owning AI or datacenter-infrastructure nor any hardware-parts factory.

We would be lucky if there would be a solid price drop in only about 1-2 years but some optimists are having those prognosis.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66QzlDewigE

The only reason anyone would buy it is because "there is Steam printed on it, so it must be valuable just by its image" and... because they can not get something comparable cheaper than that, only perhaps at about the same price.

Besides, those who want to buy a PS5 Pro, no... most likely you can not buy this hardware anymore... as it is on almost any shop completely sold out without any knowledge about "new deliveries"... so totally unknown at what time there is a new "income".

Most of them have been "rage-bought" either by GTA6 fans or by "re-sellers"... also known as "scalpers".

Some shops are still offering it for around 1200 USD and upward... but they already go for 1500 USD "in a used condition" now.

Not that it bothers me... i already own a PS5 Pro for since its launch, even with a probably soon ultra rare disc drive-attached.

Actually so far i was benefiting from this crisis as ALL MY HARDWARE... even my now several years old GPU was going up in value, almost unbelievable. I will soon have to protect my home even better... my "belongings" are just going up in value like mad... while the coins are "crashing" it seems, especially the coins stored on a bank.

The only thing that bothers me is that i do not know how to get me a new PC in 1-2 years... and i can not get me even more high-sized HDDs and SSDs... while i have a urgent need for it; so i am currently stuck, even if i got a lot already.

Sure, my PS5 Pro with disc drive and 4 TB SSD inside probably goes for around 3000 USD now... hard to imagine that it happened.

I would definitely consider buying a Steam Machine if Valve can figure out how to meet demand. I'd have no problem with DDR4 and an HDD, which would work fine for all of the games I enjoy. My main requirements would be being able to run GOG games and connect my older external storage drives, browsing the internet, and the use of nonproprietary apps.
