Fantasista Asuka

A Fun Tactical Strategy Game

This is honestly a great game focusing on strategy and Tactics on a Soccer/Football field. The game plays with a turn based style menu system so when an opponent is about to make a move against you the menu comes up allowing you to decide the action to take - whether to dribble though, pass, shoot, etc - then actions then commence with success rates based on each characters skills leading to either a success, failure, or another outcome. You can also manually open the options ahead of time if you wish to pass to an open player or setup a shot on goal so you do not need to wait for the opponent. The gameplay is quite engaging opening up new actions and abilities as the game progresses along with players gaining experience and skill ups in training sessions to improve outcomes. You can also access pause menus to sub players, adjust formations, view opponent formations and adjust strategies as needed. Story progression happens in a visual novel style with short scenes before and after each game which may give hints on strengths and weaknesses of the next team along with potential new players to recruit. The best comparative game I can think of would be Tecmo World Cup Soccer on the NES (which is from the Captain Tsubasa series in Japan). In the end it is a great experience with the only negative being not being able to view the whole schedule but this is more due to the Visual novel aspect which progresses by chapters so team reveals and such are designed to progress this narrative style.

Bubsy 4D

A Good Mascot 3D platformer

Overall this is a solid 3D mascot platformer with tight controls and the ability to combine moves together to allow for a lot of ways to traverse and climb the environment. Main criticism would be the camera as it can get caught on the environment in certain situations or can swing wildly when you are heading towards it which can be disorienting.

Ninja Five-O

Great Overlooked Ninja Platformer

This is an overall amazing game with very precise controls in movement and action. This is a classic 2D style action game in the vein of Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden with short and long range attacks along with good jumping and maneuvering. A unique feature is the grapple chain which can be used to reach higher areas and can be used to surprise enemies. You can't pull yourself through a platform like other games but you can swing around the edge which works very intuitively once you get used to it. Controls have been adjusted to fit modern controllers better compared to the original GBA interface. Music is very high energy and was a real surprise on how it just grabs you, You do get two versions of the game: Ninja Five O and the European version Ninja Cop. Again a great game and a must get when on sale. For those curious the original cartridge is one of those rare expensive games that was going for over $300 loose when I checked prices while writing this review.

MOTORSLICE

Great Parkour and Exploration Game

This is honestly an amazing game for the price point. Controls feel very tight with great traversing mechanics so movement flows from one action to the next. Combat is simple but affective with a parry mechanic a bit more forgiving than other games. Graphics in game are really well done for this style with simple colours that make it easy to point out types of terrain, enemies and collectables. It's an industrial world with oranges and greys but it's quite vibrant which explains the comparisons people have made to Mirror's Edge with it's simple colour system. The world has a lot of vertical paths and encourages exploration to find collectables. Honestly do not sleep on this game.

Tides of Tomorrow

Game is very online dependant

Took the plunge and this is a very online dependent game. I Installed, unplugged then played and was constantly bugged by network server errors. At character creation you have to choose someone to follow, there are 3 offline creations to follow but you can not just go and do your own thing. You have to follow someone else's story, you can't even stand up until you view what the person you followed has done. The game just dragged as you need to see what someone else did in many situations before you can interact which feels very limiting as I just wanted to do my own thing not look what other people did. The game does not require online connection but it is clear it is meant to be played online so I would say this game can be seen as borderline DRM because the following of other players is a major part of the game progression and when the servers get shut down what does that leave. If you just want a true single player experience this will not provide it, I asked for a refund.

Under The Island

More than just Zelda

On the surface the game has the feeling of classic Zelda games like A Link to The Past and Link's Awakening but it offers enough variety to allow it to stand on it's own. The world is a modern style setting but with fitting sci-fi and fantasy elements and though the story has a serious objective it is a very chill and light hearted experience. Exploration is engaging with the map opening up as you find new equipment which also allows to to revisit previous areas to find any new routes for hidden items and upgrades. Combat is typical for this style of game but does have more variety with enemies requiring diverse strategies. Along with boss encounters it also has challenge encounters where you will need to solve puzzles or meet a specific goal to complete the area. Overall it is a great experience and everything from the settings, colour pallet, and the music really help give a fun, relaxing, and rewarding time.

LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW RePOP

A Fun Silly Romp

This can be seen as a fun turn your brain off action game where even the characters in the game are not taking anything seriously. Combat is pretty responsive using a controller and there is some good complexity as you acquire new moves that adds quite a bit of variety in tactics as you progress which really let you destroy large groups in many different ways. Plenty of collectables that do encourage you to look around for hidden items (for example slashing the lockers in the school can lead to a lot of coins). Camera can get a little finicky in small closed in areas but you can lock on to enemies to remedy this. So just sit back and just have fun and enjoy the wild ride. Running in Linux through Heroic and having no issues.

Glowing Stones : Heroes' Awakening Bonus Edition

Very well Written and Engaging

Honestly this Visual Novel is one of the best story wise I have experienced. - Characters have a great amount of depth. - Story is quite engaging and is a good pacing between action, drama, and moments to breath. - The Addition of clue hunting also keeps you focused looking for anything in the background or anything that may look off to see if it's a clue to some side mysteries. Frankly you could cut out the mature content and still have a great experience, it really shows that a lot of care is being put in the project as a whole and isn't a skip to the naughty stuff style game.

Toziuha Night: Order of the Alchemists

A great Metroidvania

This is a solid Metroidvania capturing the classic gameplay and difficulty. Exploration is very well done giving plenty of visual ques indicating areas you can come back to with worthwhile rewards for your work. Challenging gameplay but controls are responsive so deaths don't feel cheap. The pixel art is very well done with plenty of animations and reactions to hits and attacks. One of the best you can find on GOG, enjoying it even more than Bloodstained.

Gravity Circuit

Great blend of classic games.

This is overall a great game. Controls are tight and responsive, the music is stellar and mechanics allow you to be creative in fights allowing you to approach enemies from multiple points - going head on, striking from above, using enemies as weapons - you can do a lot, though called a Mega Man clone it does have mechanics found in other games like the grappling hook in Bionic Commando which expands the game play quite a bit. In the end it's a lot of fun and experimenting with the combat can lead to a lot of fun techniques.
