Fun, but feels like half the story

The game is very obviously set up to make you buy the sequel, as it feels like only half the story was told. Other than that, it is an interesting game with some fun, if cliche characters.

If you want a challenge after xcom EU

I have the Windows Collector's Edition (CE) version on CD-ROM so I never bought it here. Some of the down sides are the larger maps, which at first sound good, however it tends to make ending missions tedious as you are hunting down this one last alien who has panicked and dropped his weapon. You spend at least half the time it takes to complete a mission just looking for the last alien who is often literally hiding in a closet, then when you do find him he doesn't even resist when you kill or capture him. Another thing are some near-game breaking bugs in the research tree. They aren't technically game breaking, but they make the game 10 times harder if you can't research proper armor because you didn't get a chance to capture a calcenite or deep one. If you get the game, grab a live Calcenite and Deep One ASAP, and make sure to read an FAQ on the proper research order for them. Seriously, capture them at all costs ASAP as you might not get a second opportunity. If you capture one in part one of a potentially 2-part mission, make sure to pick them up in your inventory so you have the capture after the second part, and capture another one if you get a chance on that mission. '

Needs a 2-stick controller

This game is a console port and is poorly designed for the PC without a controller that has both a D-pad and a stick, or two sticks. It says keyboard supported, but the controls are cumbersome in the extreme. Even using a Gravis Gamepad Pro (a controller that resembles the SNES controller with two extra L and R buttons) the interface is clunky since you need one hand on the keyboard and one on the controller. As I don't have such a controller, I haven't gotten very far past the tutorial mission. That said, the game has beautiful graphics as far as I have gotten. The artwork is first rate, and the sound is acceptable. Unfortunately I haven't gotten very far due to the poor interface which was designed with a controller in mind. GoG should put a note that a twin-stick controller is strongly recommended before you buy the game.

Super Huey1 was Meh, but SH2 was fun.

I haven't played the GOG version, but I have the original MS-DOS versions from COSMI's "Top 10 Solid Gold" and "Top 10 Solid Gold Volume II". If these are the same games, then Super Huey I is kind of boring. There are only 3 "missions", training, explore, and combat. Only the combat one is interesting, but it is the same every time. On the other hand, Super Huey II was quite fun. I'd give SH1** and SH2 *****. It's great that they bundled them together, because the tutorial in SH1 was useful to learn the game while SH2 was the "real" game.

Apple IIGS players will be disappointed

I never owned Silent Service I back when I was a kid, but I knew two people who did, one with the Apple IIGS version and one with the Apple IIe version. Compared to the Apple IIGS version, this PC version is terrible. The sound and graphics aren't so great, and it isn't as responsive and the gameplay is not as intuitive. The IIGS version used a mouse as well as keyboard. I'm probably just spoiled by having played the IIGS version at a friend's house. It's like playing the remake. The Apple IIe version is only marginally better than the DOS version, but it's still better. On the other hand, it's bundled with Silent Service II, and that one is acceptable. I never got to play Silent Service II back in the day as I owned an Apple IIGS and they never released a IIGS version, then my parents got me a Mac. It's as good or better than the IIGS version of Silent Service I.
