Control Ultimate Edition

Recommended

Staging was pretty good, although the brutalist art style is not actually my taste. Main story was interesting. Fighting was quite intense and hard towards the end. The add ons were more of a chore. I had to cheat to pass the bosses.

RollerCoaster Tycoon® Deluxe

Chris Sawyer's masterpiece

I really like isometric perspective construction games. The simple sprite-based graphics somehow make it timeless. Game idea is genius, and the execution is near perfect. Only bought it for the assets, as OpenRCT2 can pick them up as well.

Lacuna – A Sci-Fi Noir Adventure

Non-Traditional Pixelart Adventure

This is how I want to play adventure games from now on. The freedom of movement, everyday puzzles where you're allowed to fail, the sound design, the music, and above all the pixel art graphics make this a great experience.

The Settlers® 2: Gold Edition

Return to the Roots

This game has a special place in my heart. I could play this construction game for hours as a kid. It was also one of the first games I played. It is an improved version of the predecessor: graphics, gameplay and quality of life. Moreover, there is rttr.info where fans created an open-source game engine recreation with even further refinements. It is also the reason why I have 0 hours clocked on the original game. I just needed the assets.

Firewatch

A great walking simulator!

I actually liked this one. It is slow, narrative driven with very limited gameplay other than walking. However, I liked exploring the scenery and the walkie-talkie dialogs as well as the art style. Maybe not for everybody.

Tyrian 2000

See OpenTyrian

I really like the original graphics, the gunplay, and the lore. What a nice gem. There is an improved version available at github.com/opentyrian which can make use of these assets.

RoboCop: Rogue City

B-game

I liked the shooting, even the slow movement. It also gets the awkward vibe from the movies pretty well. However, side missions and dialog are a weak point because they become repetitive, the character animation is not on par, and the simple story has pacing problems. Also, some of the boss fights were a bit annoying.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Actual Improvements

I really liked the spy-thriller story and the acting. The scenes were more guided which helped with immersion and pacing. Even the new GTA like steal a car side missions were fun. Finally a reason to traverse the nice open world. I also like that the base game was continuously patched. To be fair, I played this on a better computer, so of course everything looked nicer. Although there are still glitches with invisible assets or clipping problems even in scripted scenes, so definitely a lack of polish again, albeit not as bad.

Cyberpunk 2077

Mediocre

I really liked the missions in the beginning that they also showed in the trailers. Everything afterward felt rushed, and while it still had a lot of dialog, the scenes were far less spectacular. The open world felt a bit empty and glitchy. I didn't like the RPG-like ego-shooter combat where everything is a bullet sponge and you have to level up your equipment to make it less awkward.

Thimbleweed Park

Disappointing

Sorry, I can't recommend this one although the artwork and the technical aspects of the multi-platform engine with lighting and movement (except the nauseating ghost world effects) is well done. The plot is overly self-referential with adventure games effectively derailing itself especially in the end. In the first third the puzzles are more structured and somehow solvable, but become horrible unconnected guesswork in the end. Multiple playable characters lead to repetitive dialog and even more confusing puzzle interactions. Characters lack charm and mystery. The humor is pretty flat. I was expecting so much more. Wadjet Eye Games showed how the genre evolved. Ron Gilbert was sadly too much stuck in nostalgia.
