The Blood of Dawnwalker

Nearly 5 stars - if days were longer

Brace yourselves for a longer one, friends! And yes, this is just how I write my reviews. :) I think after 20 hours, I can finally give a first little verdict. Let's start with the good stuff: the graphics, sound, and voice acting are incredibly good. Of course, I can only judge the German dub at the moment, but I really like it. The dialogue is wonderfully written and, for me, belongs among the best I have heard in an RPG. I am also really glad that I can still play the game at 1440p on Medium settings on my somewhat aging PC with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 2070 Super, and 32 GB of RAM. And quite honestly, I think it looks fantastic. Thank you to the development team! The main protagonist, Coen, is a really well-written character. I like him a lot. But other characters such as Anca, Brencis, and many others have also grown on me by now. The soundtrack is some of the best music I have heard since The Witcher 3 and its expansions. I think it is great that you can even play it from the main menu. It would have been even nicer if the soundtrack had been included as a download with the Eclipse Edition, especially considering how expensive that edition already was - at least for someone like me who does not exactly have money to burn. Everyone who worked on this soundtrack deserves a medal. :) A few words about the opening: I really liked the somewhat slower start in the village. You get enough time to get to know the people, take a good look around, and yes, of course, help yourself to a few things here and there. giggles I like the open world too. The forests, ruins, and small villages all have a really nice atmosphere, and I genuinely enjoy exploring them. I do have one small criticism, though. The snow-covered ground in some areas does not always look particularly convincing to me. Some of the snow textures can look a little rough or flat. When it actually starts snowing lightly in those areas, though, the whole scene looks much better and really beautiful. And now we get to the part that really bothers me: Of course, you CAN take your time and simply walk around the world. Nobody is constantly chasing you. But who wants to spend their entire playtime just wandering around and looking at landscapes? You also want to complete quests. And that is exactly where the problem is for me: the days and nights are unbelievably short once you get into a proper quest flow. The 30 days themselves do not bother me anymore. I actually think the system is pretty cool now. What bothers me is that almost everything costs time. Really, everything. Every tiny action and every little quest. Then skill points come into play too. If you have saved up a few points, friends, two days can disappear very quickly. Then I turn in three quests - and suddenly it is night again. Good grief, where did the entire day go? After that I spend my skill points, and suddenly it is past midnight. Quickly finish two small quests, and now it is daytime again. It just keeps going like that. Over and over! It honestly feels like I can go from day to night and back to day again within ten minutes. And that is slowly driving me crazy, because THIS is really not how I imagined this system working, friends. Not like this. Dear developers, how does this not eventually get on your nerves too? You built this beautiful open world, yet day and night practically fly by. You barely get a chance to actually experience a certain time of day and let it sink in. Keep your 30 days and nights. I have made peace with that system by now. But please make the individual days longer, or at least reconsider how much time some quests consume. Three hours to free someone from a dungeon when all I basically do is unlock a door and escort them out? Friends... that is rough. And please do not tell me, "Then just pick quests that cost less time." Sorry, folks, but that does not work for me. There are only so many grandmas and grandpas standing by the roadside who need my help and only cost me one hour. And honestly, how boring would that be? I paid 80 EUR for this game. I want to play quests, explore, and lose myself in this world - not constantly think about which task is going to eat another three hours of my day. If you absolutely want to stick with the eight-hour system, then at least rework some of these time costs. There are simply too many quests that, in my opinion, consume a completely unreasonable amount of the available time. Okay, you can probably tell by now that this really matters to me. But I will calm down again. My complaining probably will not change anything anyway. The developers clearly made a conscious decision to design the system this way, and I doubt it will fundamentally change. As I already said, the main characters are wonderful. Some of them won me over immediately, while others I learned to hate just as quickly. :D For example, I really like Brencis' estate, especially when I get to annoy his lackeys. I genuinely enjoy that entire system. I would love to give the game 5 stars. And yes, maybe I still will. I have done that with games in the past, and I think both the game and the developers deserve it. If it were not for this one pretty major issue - at least in my eyes - that I already mentioned. Dear developers: I have absolutely nothing against your 30-day system. Please do not take my earlier complaining as criticism of the 30-day limit itself. What I am really talking about is how quickly individual days and nights disappear because of certain actions and quests. Finally, I also think it is a shame that you cannot customize the controller layout. Blocking with LB while also trying to move the left stick? That becomes a real hand cramp after a while. And even the alternative control scheme does not change that. For me, block belongs on RB. And why can I not simply open the map by holding down the View button? Good grief, getting to the map is unnecessarily awkward. Despite all my criticism, I am really happy to own this game. I truly hope the developers find success, continue on their path, and maybe one day even give us a second and third game. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And thank you as well for thinking about players who do not own a high-end PC and still giving us the chance to play this truly wonderful game. Thank you! All the best!

Gothic 1 Remake

Back to the Colony - And Loving It

I recently finished the original Gothic for the very first time and even wrote a review about it. Naturally, I was incredibly excited for Gothic 1 Remake. After about 27 hours of playtime, I can honestly say that the game is exactly what I hoped it would be: a lot of fun. The graphics are beautiful, but what impressed me even more is the atmosphere. I absolutely love being out in the world during the daytime. The forests, the nature, the colors - everything looks fantastic. The Colony feels familiar while still looking modern. One detail I especially love is how the air gradually takes on a yellowish tint as you get closer to the Swamp Camp. You can practically smell the swamp long before you arrive there. 😄 Little touches like that make the world feel alive. The weather system is another huge highlight. At one point I got caught in a massive storm and could barely see a few feet ahead of me. Moments like that are incredible. Honestly, I don't think it could have been done much better. It looks fantastic and adds so much atmosphere to the world. That said, there is one thing I will probably never understand. At night, my own torch often seems to provide more light than wall torches, roadside torches, or even large fire bowls. It doesn't ruin anything, but every time I notice it, I find myself wondering why. The world itself turned out wonderfully. What impressed me the most are the many new and reworked locations. Towers are no longer just towers. Many places now invite exploration and reward curiosity. Sometimes you'll find secrets, sometimes valuable loot, and sometimes you'll stumble across something genuinely creepy. The redesigned shipwreck is a great example, and I also loved the tower nearby. There are countless places where you can tell the developers looked at the original and asked themselves, "How can we make this location even more memorable?" The result is fantastic. I actually expected the world to feel a little bigger, though. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me since I only recently finished Gothic Classic, but some of the routes between camps feel shorter than I remembered. I also wish the developers had been a little bolder with the new quests. There are new quests, and the ones I've encountered so far fit seamlessly into the game. Honestly, they feel like they have always belonged in Gothic. That's a compliment. Still, I would have loved to see even more of them. Maybe there are more waiting for me later on - after all, I'm only 27 hours in. The camps themselves are fantastic. Each one feels distinct and full of character. I also really like the new maps and the ability to place markers. It's a simple feature, but incredibly useful for explorers like me. If I had one small request, it would be a few additional marker options. One thing I like considerably less are the ambient NPC conversations. As much as I love Gothic, many of these exchanges simply don't work for me. Sometimes they barely make sense. Occasionally an NPC standing completely alone seems to start talking for no apparent reason. Most of the time, these lines don't really add much to the world and can feel a little strange. I also found myself constantly searching for secrets. More than once I spotted a waterfall, noticed a path leading upward, climbed all the way up, and thought, "There has to be something here." Maybe a hidden cave. Maybe a secret stash. Maybe something unexpected. Sometimes there was nothing there at all. Then again, maybe that's not entirely fair criticism. More often than not, I was rewarded with an amazing view over the Colony instead. And honestly, that's a reward too. After 27 hours, I still feel like I'm only scratching the surface. Many players are probably already in Chapter II or even Chapter III by now. I'm still in Chapter I. The Old Camp wants me, the Swamp Camp wants me, and I've only recently arrived at the New Camp. I like taking my time, exploring every corner, and seeing what the world has to offer. And before I forget: the Mud achievement is fantastic. When it suddenly popped up on GOG, it genuinely startled me. Then it made me laugh. A lot. Thank you for that. 😊 Despite a few things I don't completely love, none of them have reduced my enjoyment of the game. Not even close. Based on what I've played so far, Gothic 1 Remake is an easy 5 out of 5 stars for me. A huge thank you to all the developers for the years of hard work that went into this project. You managed to recreate a beloved world while making it feel fresh and exciting at the same time. And a special thank you to Kai Rosenkranz. The soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. I sincerely hope the prospects for a Gothic II Remake are looking good, because after this experience, I would love nothing more than to return to Khorinis one day. Thank you all! melcom

Gothic

Late to Gothic - But Completely Hooked

For the longest time, I avoided Gothic. Honestly, the game just looked way too dated to me, and the thought of spending hours patching and modding an old RPG before even playing it didn't sound all that appealing. I tried starting it a few times over the years, but I could never get comfortable with the controls. Looking back now, I probably should've stuck with it longer. Then GOG added Gothic to their Preservation Program, bundled it with the Union Patch, integrated PlayerKit, and SystemPack 2.0 - and suddenly everything started falling into place. Around the same time, I discovered through the "Golden Gate 2: Goddess Heart" mod for Gothic II that proper controller support was actually possible with zGamePad. That was the moment everything changed. I installed zGamePad, added kirides' GD3D11 renderer, threw in Artemiano's texture pack… and that was it. I was hooked. At the time of writing this review, I've already put more than 32 hours into the game. Sure, longtime Gothic fans could probably beat the game twice in that amount of time, but this is my first real Gothic playthrough. I already pre-ordered the Gothic 1 Remake, and honestly? Playing the original now feels like getting ready for something special. I'm finally getting to know the world, the camps, the characters, the monsters - all the stuff fans have been talking about for years. And I already know exactly what's going to happen once the remake launches. I'm going to be yelling things like: "WAIT… I KNOW THIS PLACE!" or "Oh no. I remember this guy. You absolutely can't trust him." 🤣 Honestly, it's going to be a blast. Anyway, I've already written way more than I planned, so let's wrap this up: Gothic is incredible. Amazing atmosphere, memorable characters, fantastic quests, brutal monsters - exactly the kind of RPG I love. And the best part? The game actually lets me be a complete scumbag if I want to. At some point, I realized I was stealing absolutely everything that wasn't nailed down - and slowly starting to think like a thief too. Example: I was supposed to deliver something to the Old Camp. I had literally been warned not to let the other camp see it. So naturally my first thought was: "…okay, but what happens if I show it to them anyway?" ^^ Yeah. You can probably guess what happened next. 🙈 Huge thanks to GOG for making this version of Gothic so accessible, and massive respect to the former Piranha Bytes team for creating such a unique game. 🙏 ❤️ What a game. - melcom

Sacred 2 Remaster

Good Memories, Weak Execution ...

Even if I’ll probably get heavily downvoted for this, please accept that this is simply my opinion. **Status: 2025‑11‑13** Let me start with what I don’t like. I tried playing the game with a controller because I enjoy sitting back in my chair and playing in a relaxed way. Unfortunately, that wasn’t really possible here. Combat itself is fun, but honestly, the controller setup feels completely off. Please take inspiration from games where controller support is well thought out. Copy what works — it’s better to adapt proven solutions than to reinvent something that frustrates the community. Trading, selling, buying, storing, even simple inventory management — it’s a nightmare. Why not make it “click and done”? Click on an item and it moves instantly into storage, then you can rearrange it later if needed. Potion selection on the quick bar is another nightmare. Which potion am I actually selecting? You can’t tell. I press A (Xbox controller) and instead of a healing potion, I end up using something completely different. Character creation is also problematic. How am I supposed to rename my character with a controller? On PC you just click into the field where “Shadow Warrior” is written, but with a controller it doesn’t seem possible. That’s something you should have noticed — who signed off on this? Graphics: honestly, I barely see any difference compared to the original. Maybe things look a bit sharper and less pixelated, but that’s about it. Still, I can live with that. UI: I like the design and colors, but navigating the UI/GUI with a controller is just awful. Please, take a look at other games — Diablo IV, for example. Learn from them. On the positive side, I really like how skills and spells are organized. It’s clear and easy to understand, no complaints there. Combat: still a lot of fun. As I said, I play with a controller and I really enjoy it. But again, potion selection needs to be clearer — right now I’m guessing, and 90% of the time I end up using the wrong one. Quests and voice acting (especially the German version and the Shadow Warrior) are still fantastic and funny. The nostalgia hit me hard — I laughed a lot last night. The Shadow Warrior’s lines are still brilliant. So far I’ve played about 5 hours here on GOG and about 2 hours on Steam. Overall, I do like the game. But now you need to react. Communicate on your channels. It’s not acceptable that I only find out on a Steam livestream that the GOG version is delayed. I would have liked to read that on X, Bluesky, or similar platforms. Don’t ruin this for yourselves. Communication — outside of Discord or Reddit — is absolutely essential. The majority of your community doesn’t use Discord or Reddit. If you fail here, believe me, the frustration will grow. Communicate and respond — that’s my strong recommendation. Thank you for bringing this game back. I hope there will be more improvements and optimizations to come. Thanks again! – melcom //EDIT: One more thing: removing Sacred 2 Gold as a standalone purchase is honestly a disgrace. Shame on you for that. It doesn’t matter that Sacred 2 Gold is now bundled with the remaster — players see that it’s no longer available on its own, and they’re frustrated. In my eyes, that’s not community‑friendly at all. Community‑friendly would mean: if someone already owns Sacred 2 Gold, they should get Sacred 2 Remaster at 60–70% off. And yes, there are publishers who even grant full new releases to owners of older entries. I’m not saying you always have to do that — you need to earn money — but come on, think it through. Thanks for reading.

Gothic 1 Remake - Demo (Nyras Prologue)

- melcom

A Plague Tale: Requiem

Ein Meisterwerk ...

... bei dem ich am Ende geweint habe ... Ja, dieses Spiel ist ein Meisterwerk! Unglaublich gute Atmosphaere. Danke! - melcom

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

;) "Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning" ist genau DAS Spiel, was ich derzeit gebraucht habe. Lieben Dank! <3

Dragon Age™: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Woah ... was ein cooles Game :)

"Dragon Age: Origins" - was ein hervorragendes Spiel.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Was ein Abenteuer ...

:) Was ein fantastisches Game!
