Nihil inimicius quam sibi ipse

In this game, you’ll take on the role of the manager of a small diner located on a typical remote American highway. What seems like a traditional management sim where you’ll have to cook your customers’ orders, will soon reveal itself to be a deeply narrative-driven game. Between serving up burgers and pouring whiskey, you’ll listen to the stories and problems of your hapless customers, offering advice to help them make decisions about their lives, and even stepping into their shoes when they open up to you about their struggles. Added to all this are your own poorly concealed traumas and the impending end of the world, which may be more or less figurative. Built using the Unreal Engine, the graphics feature a minimalist PS1-era style, but with meticulously crafted animations, even for the most mundane gestures, that will truly make you feel like you’re in your character’s shoes. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning the excellent voice acting for all the characters who make up this microcosm of lives lived amid regrets and remorse, doubts and misplaced certainties, all of which influence one another in the most unexpected ways. A relatively short game, but one that will keep you entertained throughout and leave you pondering long after it’s over.

CANINE

Cave canem

CANINE is the first full game from the developer PuKo. Your faithful dog has disappeared, and you must find him in what appears to be the secret laboratory of an evil corporation. You will come face to face with the horrible mutant dog that has escaped the scientists' control. This is the simple B-movie horror plot of the game, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat during the short but intense race to save your dog. The PSX-style graphics and the AI of the monster that will chase you throughout the game do their job to convey a claustrophobic atmosphere of constant danger. The game also offers some replayability with an additional difficulty mode, alternative endings, and a certain amount of freedom in exploring the facility you find yourself in, as well as the possibility of unlocking achievements on GOG Galaxy. A solid experience for a reasonable price.
