Hi i have been having some issues playing games recently. I was playing the witcher 3 for 20 min. And then suddenly my screen said no video input. After this happend 3 times, i went into amd settings and put the fans to 100%. No more crashes. All in all this isnt really a great solution to fix the problem. So what could be causing this. my gpu is AMD R9 280X on win 10. Also it happens on other games if i dont have my fans at 100%. My gpu is almost 3 years old. Any help please.

Sounds like it is over heating, hence the fan at 100%.

If there are multiple fans on the GPU, ensure they are all working. Also monitor the fans when you have high temps, the thermistors that regulate fan speed may be deficient.

No darth i have to put the fans at a 100% for my games to work. :)
Paladin i have been monitering my gpu and they seem to no longer throttle up on high temps.Only manually. All fans are moving.
I just did a test and on auto my fans never make it past 20%. Unless i force it.

Something else you have to consider is a dusty environment. Take a look inside the case and see if there's a collection of dust there and get a good can of air to blow it out from time to time.

You'd be surprised how much collected dust clogging up the fins of heat sinks or gathering in the fans can really affect the heat index. Blow out all the heat sinks, CPU and GPU, consider possibly using water cooling for either, but then you'll have a radiator to look after as well.

Yea its dust free JDelekto. It something i tend to do regulary. Overall it seems to be a driver issue sadily. I recently installed windows 10 and cleaned my system. It seems others people are having problems with there amd gpu fans not throttling up at the right temps. It a common problem for them to always be stuck at 20%. A amd user with similar problems has helped me set up afterburner for fan control. Every thing working fine now. Looks like its time to get a new card.

Was it a clean install of Windows 10 or an upgrade? People recommend not only uninstalling old video drivers before upgrading Windows, but even when upgrading to a new graphics card. At least you got it sorted out.

Actually it is a problem with windows 10 my graphics card and my drivers. Its seems some of the 280x just dont like windows 10. Amd have brought out multiple fixes but every now and again crimson fan control options get locked at 20%. even if your cards above 90c. Its good to know iam not the only one. It seem to happen when updating new amd drivers, but only to a few.
Yep cleetus bios is updated/flashed to latest.
Its a temp fix till i find a good cheap powerful new card.

If your case has a removable side, you might try taking that off just to get more air flow in there. My case had a clear plastic window on the side, so I removed that plastic window and put some pet-proof window screen (its thicker than normal screening material and more durable) on there to replace the window. It keeps stuff from getting in there, but has the added benefit of much greater airflow than the relatively small area offered by the system fans.

Assuming that you're using an up to date driver, AMD has recently changed its overclocking tool to WattMan. Haven't seen in it action (currently using NVIDIA at work and my home cards are from the 5xxx generation), but I've read that it had some problems initially.

First of all,

On the PC front, I'd suggest doing a reset in WattMan, if there's a way, just to make sure nothing is screwy. If that doesn't help, perhaps defaults are wrong, trying playing with it. One thing I'd suggest is undervolting, that is, reducing voltage. AMD cards and CPU's often work fine with lower voltage, and that reduces power consumption and heat.

If WattMan isn't available for the 280x, Try MSI Afterburner.

Hey Et3D iam using afterburner now and it works great. I think its time to save up for a geforce. Hopefully i can pick up something silmilar to a 280x form geforce cheaply .

Why? It sounds like you've found a perfectly acceptable workaround for a problem that's not likely to last very long if it is a driver bug. It would be silly to replace such a powerful and expensive card as a 290X because of a minor blip like this.

Probaly right i guess. Grass is never greener. :) Its just amd drivers since crimson seem to have taken a step back.
Oh and witcher 3 now runs at a cool 54C. :)
